Martha R. Clarke Williams papers, 1884-1985 (bulk 1884-1955).

Consists of diaries (bulk), commonplace books, correspondence, notebooks, accounts books, writings, a typescript for a book, a scrapbook, a baby book, and a photograph album dating from 1884 to 1985, although the bulk dates from 1884 to 1955. The collection documents the life of Martha R. Clarke Williams. Subjects documented in the collection include women's colleges, women's writings, travel, education, marriage, and motherhood. There are travel and vacation diaries that describe trips to Canada in the 1890s; to Europe and the Middle East in 1897-1898; Europe in 1910, 1921-1923, and 1927; Bermuda in 1912; and Washington D.C., New Orleans, Oklahoma, New England, and elsewhere in the United States. The account books primarily relate to travel. A photograph album and diaries document Williams's attendance at Smith College from 1891 to 1893. Williams made the cyanotype photographs. The notebooks contain Williams's ideas for stories and plays and the writings (1895-1905 and n.d.) include Williams's thesis. The family correspondence dates from 1891 to 1906. Mary Frances Williams, daughter of Martha R. Clarke Williams, wrote the biography (1985) and compiled the scrapbook (1980). Notes created by Mary Frances Williams are inserted in a number of the volumes.
